BOYZ WILL BE BOYZ

As I sit here in the Jen Den, peeking at my little slice of sky, reflecting on this series of photos and what I’d like to say about it, I can’t help but feel deeply grateful for the fact that today I got to wear a short sleeve shirt and sandals (wink, wink), as it is finally, mercifully, no longer raining in my part of the state (guttural woop!).

I was in New York for the greater part of May and can count on one hand the number of days I saw sunshine, which, ironically, perfectly mirrored my temperament - seasonal affective? Perhaps. But by god, I welcome this sunshine something fierce.

Hanging out with this rambunctious family of five last fall was invigorating, entertaining, and chaotic - my preferred state of creation where cognitive thought and premeditation go right out the window.

The deepest compliment I can ever receive from a client is ‘It’s just US’.

With that being said, this is them. Xo

BETHANY AND HER BOYS

Last September when I was in New York I got a notification in my DM’s. It was from a Mama in New York, asking if I was still in town and available for an in home maternity shoot. Dream scenario? Yusss.

Pregnant with her third baby boy, raising two toddlers and running a successful blog, Bethany was as graceful as she is beautiful and my time with her and her boys was thoroughly enjoyable.

She has since given birth to a healthy baby boy, Will (more affectionately referred to as ‘lil Cootie) whom you can get your fill of on her instagram account. Enjoy! Xo

P. INTIMATE PORTRAITS | Antelope Island, UT

THAT BODY LOVING JOURNEY..

..is a long and winding road, am I right? With left turns, round-a-bouts, and treadmill-esque one way streets, the path to accepting the beautiful eco-system that is our body is anything *but* straight forward.

I have found, though - through direct experience - that getting intimate portraits done is like dropping an anchor into a stormy sea; the images gave me something solid and tangible to reflect on in order to further accept, like, and respect the place that gives me a home on planet earth.

P. wanted to incorporate nature into the images and Antelope Island (and sun/clouds/sky) never ever ever disappoints. We trekked about a mile out onto the salty bed and managed to erect a backdrop that produced some of my favorite images to date. Enjoy! Xo

NATALIE + BILLY WEDDING | Skylodge at Powder Mountain, UT

DANCE PARTY DANCE PARTY, TAKE OFF YOUR PANTS PARTY

My instructions for this wedding were very clear - candid, candid, candid, with a side of candid. What Natalie and Billy wanted most for their day was for it to be 100% enjoyed by all and that especially meant no stuffiness or stiff formalities regarding photography.

So what did I do? I took on the role of emotional photojournalist and tasked myself with creating images that felt loose and loving; like they were shot by an old friend.

These mountaintop yurt side nuptials were some of the most intimate I’ve had the privilege to witness, and the ensuing celebrations resembled that of a gang of pals a la the cast of Friends - a palpable sense that they’d been through the good times and the tough times together.

All in all, the location, libations, overwhelming love and camaraderie made for an incredibly unique and special capsule celebration that I hope translates in the images. Enjoy! Xxo

PEREZ MATERNITY AT HOME | Hudson Valley, NY

OH BABY

Ya’ll, if I’ve learned one thing, it’s that the Sundance Film Festival is a testament to the emotional, physical, and mental strength of humankind. I’m only semi-joking. This year’s whirlwind expanded and contracted in jest, taking me to peaks and valleys at a moments notice all the while offering up challenges and inspiration to fill me up to capacity.

As with all endings, transitional periods come with a sharp edge for me, albeit one that has been mercifully dulled over time (I’d like to formally thank my meditation practice here), and in refocusing my energy towards everyday life and the year ahead, I’m finding that a delicate balance of planning and un-planning is needed in order to let life surprise me in all of the best ways.

Speaking of transitioning, with the impending birth of their (first) little one, these two were about to go from a camp of two (plus Salma the coonhound) to a brood of three.

Escaping to upstate NY has been a tradition for them and they loved the idea of combining a getaway with an intimate photo session to commemorate this monumentally special period of life, and I don’t think they could’ve found a more charming nook to stay in. Xxo
