BOYZ WILL BE BOYZ

As I sit here in the Jen Den, peeking at my little slice of sky, reflecting on this series of photos and what I’d like to say about it, I can’t help but feel deeply grateful for the fact that today I got to wear a short sleeve shirt and sandals (wink, wink), as it is finally, mercifully, no longer raining in my part of the state (guttural woop!).

I was in New York for the greater part of May and can count on one hand the number of days I saw sunshine, which, ironically, perfectly mirrored my temperament - seasonal affective? Perhaps. But by god, I welcome this sunshine something fierce.

Hanging out with this rambunctious family of five last fall was invigorating, entertaining, and chaotic - my preferred state of creation where cognitive thought and premeditation go right out the window.

The deepest compliment I can ever receive from a client is ‘It’s just US’.

With that being said, this is them. Xo

CATCH UP

Hey blog fam! Oof, 2019. Hi. So, last I checked, blogging is still a thing, and even if it wasn’t, over the past 8 non-blogging months of my life, I’ve come to miss it.

It became clear to me that it’s another avenue for me to exercise my storytelling muscles and since that is a practice I feel is worth putting energy into, I’m back at it with a swell of fresh mojo.

When looking back through my galleries deciding where to pick back up (almost 200 by the way whaaaat) I felt a twinge of shame at how few I’ve shared. These stories deserve a home outside of my hard drive and I’m pumped to start chipping away at the block.

First up, Laura, Strader, and their Adonis baby boy, Coyote Hawk. I passed this long haired fam on the streets of Abbot Kinney in September 2017 during the annual arts fair, and it only took about 5 full seconds after passing them for me to stop, turn, and backtrack to ask if they’d be interested in a family photo shoot while I was in town (getting better at this, ha).

The stars aligned and they invited me into their home in Venice Beach, which, funnily enough, they’ve since moved out of, making this post all the more relevant.

Don’t forget to check out Laura’s jewelry company Turquoise and Tobacco and be sure to click the heart at the bottom if you enjoyed the post. Xxo

THE FIERY BABE

I'm what you would call an extroverted introvert.  I love being social - but only for short periods of time.  I live mostly in my head and need solo time to process, recoup, and feel 'whole' after long periods of time spent in others' company.

But sometimes, I get to be around people with immensely calming energy like Jen and Landon.  The quietness of their voices and the calmness of their demeanor was ever present in the way they handled their rambunctious toddler, and I was left to observe the ways in which their loving family dynamic unfolded.

ERICKSON FAMILY AT HOME | Provo, Ut

I was blessed with a pretty epic childhood.

Playing barefoot in our 3 acre backyard until late into the night, never wearing clothes, riding our bikes all around town, and imagining we lived in the jungle was all in a days work.

I believe that's where the pull to shoot families is rooted for me - wanting to capture that same wildness and wonderment that my youth was filled with, for others.

This family of tender souls exuded an overwhelming calming and loving energy and never have two children stole my heart quicker.  Xo

"What I like about black-and-white photographs is that they're more like reading the book than seeing the movie."

- Walt Whitman

It's no secret that I love black and white photography.  It's classic, timeless, and raw, stripping away everything but emotion - just what this family is bursting with. Xo
